Romney scores key conservative backing!
from THE HILL
The man credited with coining the phrase “Moral Majority,” leading conservative Paul Weyrich, is endorsing former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s (R) bid for president. Weyrich is the chairman and CEO of the Free Congress Research and Education Foundation, and was the founding president of the Heritage Foundation.
“As he travels across the country, Governor Romney has outlined a blueprint to build a stronger America rooted in our common conservative principles,” Weyrich stated.
Weyrich’s backing is a major coup for Romney, who has sought to calm whatever fears religious and social conservatives might have about his Mormon faith and concerns they might have about his stances on key issues, such as abortion and gay marriage.
“Paul Weyrich has put his stamp on the conservative movement in this country,” Romney said. “It is an honor to have his support and counsel. Through our efforts, we can work to ensure that Washington always stands on the side of building stronger American families.”

WHO IS PAUL WEYRICH?

Born in Racine, Wisconsin, Weyrich (65) became involved in politics while a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was active in the Racine County Young Repulbicans from 1961 to 1963 and in Barry Goldwater's 1964 presidential campaign. He spent his early career in jouralism as political reporter for the Milwaukee Sentinel newspaper and, in radio, as a reporter for WAXO-FM in Kenosha and as news director of KQXI in Denver. In 1967, he became Press Secretary to Republican US Senator Gordon Allott of Colorado. While serving in this capacity, he met Jack Wilson, an aide of Joseph Coors, patriarch of the Coors brewing family. Frustrated with the state of public policy research, they founded Analysis and Research Inc. in 1971, but this organization failed to gain traction. In 1973, with the financial backing of Coors, Weyrich and Ed Feulner founded the Heritage Foundation as a think tank to counterbalance prevailing sentiment on taxation and regulation, which they considered to be anti-business. Weyrich is confined to a wheelchair due to a spinal injury. Complications from a fall in September 2004 required the amputation of his legs in July 2005. He is a member of the the Melkite Greek-Catholic, Holy Transfiguration Church, McLean, VA- http://www.melkite.org/
